Somebody hit my Z4 and drove off. Camera quality isn’t good enough to make anything out other than a boring white sedan with a ripoff BMW hood fin, a spare tire on the back passenger side, random blackish marks on both lower sides of the bumper, tinted windows, and base Nevada license plates. Small dent on the driver door and a scratch that I hope can buff out. But ugh. Happened at 8:56AM so the driver was probably hung over but not drunk. And you just look at how much space there is and how many possible ways they could have performed a U-Turn without hitting the one car within 20 feet. /sigh

It’s a prior gen Jetta (as 19 is a new model) , appears to be on a spare.

Thank you. Your ability to identify regular cars is amazing.

I was young and broke and stupid once, and given driving around on a spare tire, I have to assume the driver is too so I’m not judging, but a simple “sorry’ note versus just driving off would have made a huge difference.

The video just makes me cringe so much because the driver slows down, so he or she sees the car, then just hits it anyway. I was honestly expecting a BRO TRUCK or an SUV that was oblivious to a small roadster, but hope.

Someone else will probably know the year and trim level by the wheels or lights etc.

The E93 and R230 are the wife’s, hence being outside. :)

The E85 and a 996 in the garage are mine.

You can still see the back wheels when that white car backs up. Unless it shot a springboard out the back of it, it didn’t come anywhere near to hitting that blue Bimmer. There was at least a few feet between the back of that car and yours. Better rewind the tape some more.

There’s an audible thunk sound loud enough for cameras ~30 feet away to hear when the impact occurs. The Z4's suspension moves after the impact. And there is now a dent in the driver side door plus paint scratches in exactly the same spot where the rear bumper of the car in the video clearly hits it. And after the car hits my Z4, it drives off quickly. Plus I wouldn’t have gone to the trouble of going through surveillance video, capturing the clip of my car getting hit, and posting it online if I didn’t honestly believe someone hit my car. Go home, Skychismo. You’re drunk.

I shouldn’t judge because given the choice I’d have 10 Japanese sports cars. But why does your wife have two different vehicles that perform the exact same role? They’re direct competitors!

And then you’ve got two sports cars!

I guess I’d expect something different. A hatch and a wagon perhaps. A sports car and an SUV. Even a bigger sports car and a smaller one would be something . This I do not understand.

Wife’s car. She apparently has a thing for 2000s German convertibles in silver with red interiors. Which is great except for the whole cost of ownership part.

Oh, this is fun. :)

The SL500 she bought a few years ago. Then we had a kid. But now she needs a back seat in order to put a car seat in . And the number of hardtop convertibles that are child-not-unfriendly (friendly is a bit kind) are incredibly rare. Hence she bought the 335i.

So why does she still have the SL500? Great question! Every time she goes to sell it, either something is broken, or it’s winter and there is no demand, or she’s too busy, etc. Always some excuse.

The yellow XTerra in the background is also mine. And an Infiniti G35X is also hers. Our neighbors either think we have several room mates or hate us... or both.

So the bottom line is that those two very similar hardtop folding coupes serve different roles for you guys.

I notice you dodged explaining why you have two two-seater sports cars ;)

Not at all. I had a Boxster, but I sold it slightly after 100k because selling German cars at 100k is the secret to not dying from maintenance costs while still retaining some resale value.

To replace it, I bought my 996 because I got an insanely good deal on a super low mileage car. And it actually has back seats. Not super functional back seats, but functional enough that I could play the “we can put a future baby in the back” card with my wife .

Flash forward to a few years later. I really miss having a convertible, but now I have a kid. So I start looking, but four seat convertibles are fairly rare, and most two seat convertibles are not baby friendly.

Enter the Z4. A lot of car for the money. Non-M models share a lot parts with the E46, keeping repair costs down. Some owners were rich enough to own them as garage queens that they never drove. And for some reason, they depreciated heavily. The result is a killer value on the used market - enough to justify spending more than I was planning upfront. But the real seller from a convincing my wife standpoint was that they had a fairly high safety rating [for a convertible], LATCH hooks to attach a booster seat, and an airbag deactivation switch all standard. Start crazy - like an old Porsche 914 - then you have room to compromise. The Z4 is certainly a safer car for a kid than a near 50 year old death trap, right?

So now the 996 is a bit of a garage queen, which is stupid because it isn’t going to appreciate anytime soon. But it puts a smile on my face when I drive it, and I can’t find anything better for what it’s worth.

Selling the Z4 and the 996 and buying a n Evora would probably be the smart move, but I can’t justify it financially. Plus there’s real fun in being able to switch up what car you take to work. And if something breaks or needs to be serviced and you don’t have the time, it’s nice to have backup vehicles.

I really need to do Doug-Score style posts for the cars I have and had, but I just never seem to have the time because DAD LIFE.
